About the Position: This position is located in Director for Nursing, Department of Medical Nursing, Medical & Total Joint Nursing, (5 Center), which is a fast pace Medical-Surgical/Ortho inpatient Ward. The ultimate goal to optimize patient care outcomes utilizing a patient centered, team approach, while maintaining a climate that fosters dignity and respect for patients and staff. Incumbent can expect to take care of our, retired military members, Active duty and their beneficiaries. Staffing includes a highly skilled mix of military, GS civilian, and contract nurses.Position requires incumbent to work both 12 hour nights and day shifts.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Prolonged periods of walking and standing are required, as well as recurring requirements/periods of heavy lifting to lift,bend and stoop, i.e., in helping patients.

Parking at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center is very limited and is primarily first come, first serve. The use of commuting alternatives is highly recommended. The Mass Transit Fringe Benefits (MTFB) are available to Federal Civilian employees. This is in addition to the current salary, up to $ 125 per month (subject to change), for the commuting costs using Mass Transit. MTFB can be applied to rail, bus and/or approved vanpools but not parking costs.

Responsibilities
  • Administer professional patient care in accordance with nursing standards of practice, licensed independent provider and established policies and procedures.
  • Utilize the comprehensive nursing process to formulate patient care plans for patients with a medical-surgical/orthopedic inpatient ward.
  • Identify, document and implement nursing care, appropriate to patient care problems.
  • Identify effectiveness of care provided, revising care plans as needed.
  • Select the course of action in implementing licensed independent provider's orders; interpreting appropriateness to the patient's present condition.
  • Act as a facilitator to mediate complaints and concerns of patients, family members taking immediate actions to resolve or refer to a higher level.
  • Instruct patients and family members regarding disease processes, providing emotional support as needed.
  • Set up, operate, monitor and interpret various medical equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons.
  • This position requires you to satisfactorily complete a pre-employment physical examination.
  • This position is covered by the Department of Defense Civilian Employee Drug-Free Workplace Program as a testing designated position (TDP). You are required to pass urinalysis testing, as required prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
  • This position requires the incumbent to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
  • This position requires the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
  • This position has been designated as Mission Essential and the incumbent must assume essential personnel status during inclement weather/emergencies.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or requirements described below. **Basic Requirement for Clinical Nurse:

Education:** A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts at the time of submission of your application).

Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. (NOTE: You must submit a copy of your certification at the time of submission of your application).

Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Experience: In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

Successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field;

OR

at least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level) which includes providing direct nursing care to patients within an inpatient medical-surgical and/or medical-surgical orthopedic ward; interpreting telemetry equipment; documenting in electronic medical records; developing/implementing patient assessments and care plans AND possession of a diploma, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing educational program. (Note: You must attach a copy of your registration, if applicable.)

Note:Employees currently assigned to positions in this occupational series as of September 2017 will be considered to have met the basic requirements for the position occupied.
