Position Summary/Purpose of Position

Reporting to the Coordinator, Logistics and Fleet Services, the Fleet Manager manages Facilities Management’s Fleet automotive/vehicle maintenance unit, FM Fleet inventory, and the Unit’s staff. Responsibilities include developing and implementing a vehicle maintenance program, collaborating and leading maintenance efforts for the vehicle inspection and accident reporting programs, and managing the fleet budget.

Facility Management’s fleet department manages 255 owned vehicles and special equipment. Budget includes approximately $2 million in equipment/vehicles, $70,000 in tools and specialized equipment, and over $325,000 in allocated funds for repair parts and fuel.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience required.

Experience: With Bachelors degree, six (6) years of applicable experience, with a minimum of three (3) years of experience in a lead or supervisory capacity. Without a degree, ten (10) years of applicable experience required, with a minimum of three (3) years of experience in a lead or supervisory capacity. Experience must be progressive in nature and responsible in servicing, maintenance and repair of motor vehicles or motor equipment experience.

Knowledge/Skills & Abilities:

Comprehensive knowledge of personnel management principles, supervisory practices, and the ability to apply those principles. Must possess knowledge and experience to plan all phases of work including planning, estimating, scheduling, budgeting, and inspection of state vehicles.

Must have the ability and willingness to work with all level of individuals within the organization, as well as the ability to motivate a diverse workforce. Must have the ability to present recommendations clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Must be able to use a computer for basic word processing, electronic communications (e-mail), Gmail, Microsoft Office and an automated management system.

Must possess the ability to evaluate the vehicle repair and replacement needs of the trades units with comprehensive knowledge of preventive and field maintenance scheduling. Must keep current with industry standards and practices/technology and develop staff to do the same.

Must have strong organizational skills, attention to detail and time management abilities, and problem solving skills.

General knowledge in applying the basic principles of operation, basic components, malfunctions, repair practices and preventive maintenance techniques for internal combustion engines including diesel and motor vehicle systems and sub-assemblies. General knowledge of the procedures, methods, tools, materials, supplies, and technical manuals used in servicing, maintaining, repairing and adjusting automotive equipment. Knowledge of the proper use, care and maintenance of standard hand and power tools. Understanding of the proper use and maintenance of the tools and equipment of the automotive trade; preparing estimates of time and materials required for a job.

Preferences

Preferences:

  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification.

  • Previous experience working with an automated facilities management system (FMS) or related database.

  • Previous experience working in a University setting or higher education.

Additional Certifications
  • Must have CFC Certification Level 1.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid CDL-Class A Maryland Driver’s license or equivalent (with fewer than 6 points).

  • Must adhere to all Department of Transportation (DOT) rules and regulations including participation in a random drug-testing program.

The approved salary range for this vacancy is: $65,572 – $81,965.

Physical Demands

Work is performed in both an office environment, in the Automotive Shop and in the field. Incumbent will be required to perform some hands-on tasks as well as to inspect the work of others, which will require the ability to work in hazardous or irritating environments, including confined spaces, lifting, bending, stooping, working at heights, and in adverse conditions. Automotive hazards include the need to be aware of and to work safely around asbestos, carbon dioxide and electronic equipment. Incumbent must be able to wear and work in personal protective equipment. Position is that of an Essential Employee, subject to a 24 hour/ day, 7 day/week span of operation.
