University of Maryland University College seeks a Director of Veterans Initiatives and Outreach. Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Veterans Initiatives, the Director of Veterans Initiatives and Outreach provides operational planning, and support of university-wide veteran student services and ensures that veteran students receive the resources, support, and advocacy needed to facilitate achieving their post-military educational, career and professional goals. The Director is responsible for implementing and operating a nation-wide veterans recruitment and retention plan, promoting collaboration within UMUC and the surrounding community to increase awareness and sensitivity to issues concerning veterans; for creating an encouraging environment by acknowledging, honoring, and addressing veterans’ unique needs; for forging partnerships with third party organizations to build a comprehensive suite of services beyond the scope of education; and for building relationships with the local community to secure support for the Vessey Veterans Resource Center (VRC).
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Implements initiatives that focus on new veteran student recruitment and veteran student retention that support the overall UMUC growth strategy
Assists with establishing and tracking success metrics for both new student recruitment and new student retention
Leads the Vessey VRC to attain or exceed success metrics
Researches and establishes partnerships with Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs) and other organizations to support UMUC veteran student growth
Establish strong relationships with area employers to create multiple pathways to jobs
Monitors, tracks and reports the needs of the current student veteran population; recommends new initiatives according to the identified needs
Maintains up-to-date information on effective veteran services at other institutions and in the community and replicate as appropriate at UMUC
Provides oversight and management of the Veterans Services Liaison and UMUC One2One programs, ensuring new students’ knowledge and familiarity with the resources available to them.
Collaborates with VA agencies, non-profit groups and other independent agencies on securing resources to enhance the holistic wellbeing of student veterans
Consults with students regarding academic concerns and assists students in obtaining support and/or resources to meet specific needs throughout their student lifecycle
Works with student veterans to facilitate a successful transition to civilian life
Coordinates activities, promotional efforts, and outreach for the Vessey VRC
Selects, supervises and evaluates VRC staff and ensures effective training and assessment modules are in place to maintain required subject matter expertise
Other duties as assigned
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning; four (4) years working in higher education, preferably with the military or veteran community. Must be able to pass a U.S. background check.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
A minimum of 1-3 years of supervisory experience preferred.
